Virginia has always had a fascination with dogs, ever since growing up alongside Tolly, a very loveable and Irish setter/Labrador mix. He has been the main inspiration for her work, along with Polly, her Mum's Springer spaniel cross Labrador, whose big paws, big ears, very springy and ever so slightly neurotic nature make them the perfect artist's muse. Since graduating from University of Wolverhampton in 1997, she became an artist in residence at Edgbaston High School in Birmingham. She then set up her own studio in Northamptonshire and now in Warwickshire. Her dogs begin their lives as extruded tubes of hand built clay, which are then manipulated into the animal forms. Once dried and fired, the dogs are placed into a brick pit, which is packed with newspapers, colour supplements and sawdust and set alight, resulting in a very natural and unique finish. The spotty and patchy dogs are a result of masking areas with clay and foil preventing exposure to the smoke.
