Valerie was born in Surrey. She studied Drawing and Book Illustration for four years at the Wimbledon School of Art from which she gained entrance to the Royal College of Art, London for a further three years. She gained a Honours Degree in Painting.

Her and her family moved to Dorset and painted intermittently. On returning to teaching Art she studied etching at the Bournemouth and Poole School of Art and Design.

She exhibited her work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and because of the success she took up etching full time and now many galleries throughout the country and abroad show her work.

Nature is a constant inspiration – the changing seasons and colours, the variety of shapes and forms of flowers and foliage, birds, animals, insects etc. The Dorset landscape and seashore provide endless subject matter. She enjoys the use of line and texture in the disciplined process of etching trying to preserve a spontaneity and liveliness of the intricate work of using a fine needle. The aquatint process allows a tonal quality very like washes of watercolour which gives a transparent to the print.
