Her work has been widely exhibited in the UK and abroad and can be found in private and public collections. Susan is a designer and maker of handmade porcelain vase, bowls and platters. The pieces are influenced by fabric design from the 1950,s and 1960,s. Painters such as Ben Nicholson and Paul Klee influence some pieces. A sheet of black clay is rolled out and then sheets of coloured porcelain are laminated onto each side. A thin layer of black slip is poured on top and allowed to dry. The inlays are cut from sheets of hand coloured porcelain (with coloured slips on the reverse side) and rolled in to make the design. The black slip is washed off leaving an outline around the pattern. The different forms are then made and low fired, polished, then high fired to produce a smooth matt, watertight finish. |
