Mary Sumner
During the 1990s a successful partnership was formed with her sister Rachel, creating fine art textiles for private and public collections. She is re-discovering painting with acrylics; re-occurring themes include gardens and animals, local countryside and the wonderful landscapes of the South West – all a constant inspiration offering a wealth of subject matter. When she starts a piece of work, she illustrates experiences of her daily life walking most days, she may take a photo, collect a ‘found object’, jot down a phrase or do a pencil sketch for referring to later. These are a short hand for developing a composition later in the studio. Mary has had several public commissions, which include a series of silk paintings featuring local landmarks for Dawlish Hospital Project, a series of silk paintings on the natural world for Newton Abbott Hospital. She exhibited her work widely in the West Country as well as at the Affordable Art Fairs in Bristol and London where she has been very successful. |
