Lea Phillips

 Tall Vase

Lea was born in Poole, Dorset in 1960 and attended art foundation course at Bournemouth College in 1978. After a valuable year under the instruction of Peter Studley she attended Harrow College and in1982 she gained an HND in Studio Pottery

After college she worked for the slipware potter Mary Wondrausch at Compton in Surrey, gaining experience in throwing and slipware decoration. As a self-employed potter in Guildford I produced a range of earthenware pots decorated with slips and under glazes. The making of my own pots was for some years combined with teaching and technician work in adult education.

She now produces a full range of domestic stoneware as well as some larger one-off pieces. Pattern and colour are long standing interests, she finds oxidised stoneware best my expressive style, as I can combine clearly defined designs with the richness and subtly of high fired glazes. Most of herpots are decorated with brightly coloured glazes on a white base glaze, creating either geometric or free-flowing designs that describe and enhance the form.
