John was born in Bristol, 1929. Attended Bath Academy of Art 1949 - 1952 and then became Course Director, Part-time Courses in the Visual Arts at the Bath College of Higher Education from 1958 - 1985. 'Landscape has always provided the references for my paintings and drawings; from then on it is a question of improvising and moving the material around. Hopefully, they then become simple visual statements. I now make images that run parallel to nature rather than rely on direct observations. Echoes and sonorities of landscape will inevitably persist' Among others, he was awarded a Winston Churchill Trust Fellowship, to travel and work as a painter in New Mexico, USA, 1966. Completed two murals at the Café Grün, Bremen, 1985. In 1987 awarded a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship to research Emil Nolde and complete a thematic series of paintings in North Germany.
