Jo March

Jo was born in 1962, the daughter of a farmer and a district nurse and grew up in a small moorland village of Darite, South East Cornwall. She studied English and European Studies at the University of Sheffield, gaining a BA(Hons). She moved back to Cornwall in 1986 and slowly began to teach herself to paint. Her paintings are remarkably individual in outlook and style, drawing inspiration from the surrounding countryside and the people that she met whilst accompanying her parents on their daily rounds. Her earlier work was mainly of portraits of people and animals, but more recently landscapes have suddenly taken prominence over the figures and her aim is to gain a greater understanding of the surrounding countryside. 'When I do paint people they tend to be archetypal because I want them to have a certain meaning within a historical landscape, which has changed so little over the years.' Her paintings are exhibited regularly in Cornwall, Dorset and Worcestershire. She has also undertaken several commissions for greyhounds - the most recent was of 'Farloe Verdict', the winner of the English and Scottish Greyhound Derbys.
