Fred Yates 1922 - 2008

Fred was born in Manchester. Aged 18 he began work as an insurance clerk before leaving to serve in the Grenadier Guards in World War II. In 1946 he moved to Bournemouth to study at the College of Art, finishing there in 1951. During his final year he won a travelling scholarship to Rome and Florence, at the end of this he then went on to become an Art Teacher in Manchester until 1969 after which he moved to Cornwall to become a full time painter.
'Every time I hear the clock strike four in the afternoon I jump for joy. That's the time when I was teaching, that a release came and I was free to paint. I tried to be a good teacher but I wasn't really, and I just cannot believe that now every minute of the day is a four o'clock feeling. Hurrah''. Fred began to paint the people and places of the South West. He loves painting people having fun out and about or in dream world situations which are generally very amusing but on occasion can have a hint of wistfulness about them. 'The magic of pierrots, piers and circuses in Blackpool and Brighton, and indeed the strange glamorous landscapes of Cap Ferrat and Nice become my unashamed private world of fairy tale, arcady and angels.'
Fred's work has the freshness and simplicity of a child and shows a great sense of fun, at the same time one is aware of his incredibly sophisticated artistic abilities. His paintings show a delicacy of touch, which is apparent even in his highly textured oils. Fred has had his work exhibited in most of the major cities in the UK and has completed many commissions during his life. His paintings are in a number of private and public collections throughout the UK and the world. Just to mention a few, 'The Paris Salon', 'The Royal Academy', 'John Moore's Gallery' Liverpool and 'Courcoux and Courcoux' Stockbridge. Fred left the UK to live in Provence in the late 1990's.
He will be very sadly missed.
