Ardine specialises in the techniques of sawdust/pit firing and over the last 15 years has gained international respect for the quality of her work. The nature of the firing makes it very difficult to control but the effects obtained can be magical. Ardine treats the surfaces of her finely thrown and burnished pieces with a range of soluble, metallic salts. Solutions of these are brushed and sponged onto the bisque fired work. These are then carefully placed and stacked in the kiln, surrounded by sawdust, wood shavings and pieces of wood. When the kiln is full it is lit from the top, covered and allowed to burn down slowly. The action of the hot carbon and smoke on the metallic salts produces delicate blushes of colour and areas of soft grey and intense black. |
